Firefighters battle blaze in hospital elevator

Fire in an elevator shift at St John of God Hospital in Murdoch has caused $50,000 damage.

Smoke was seen billowing from the shaft about 11.30pm, prompting the Department of Emergency Services to send 60 firefighters to the scene.

“We had our ladders, special pumps with heavy rescue equipment and vertical rescue equipment,” a DFES spokesman said.

“We weren’t sure if anyone was in the lift but it was confined to a lift shaft so no-one at the hospital had to be evacuated.

“The fire caused $50,000 damage and started from a light inside the shaft.”

Firefighters were at the scene for about two hours.
