Win No.22 for 'Big Daddy' Browne

Unbeaten heavyweight Lucas Browne stayed on track for a future shot at the world heavyweight title with a stoppage of NZ-based journeyman Chauncy Welliver in Melbourne tonight.

Former Northbridge bouncer Browne, now trained by Jeff Fenech in Sydney, banged home a series of right hands to close the left eye of the oversized Welliver, forcing the referee and ringside doctor to intervene at the end of the fifth round.

"Big Daddy" Browne, who defended his WBC Eurasian Pacific and WBA Intercontinental titles, took his perfect record to 22-0, with 19 of those wins coming early.

Browne looked all the better fighting at around 116kg - about 6kg lighter than in his previous bout against Andriy Rudenko in August. Welliver weighed not much off a whopping 140kg but this was only his ninth loss in 69 fights and he still hasn't been put down.

Before the bout at the Hisense Arena, Browne, the reigning Commonwealth champion, was ranked in the top 10 by the major sanctioning bodies, including fifth by the World Boxing Association.
