Quirky drive for younger punters

Meet Ashbeclee, Perth's new triple-decker 20-somethings.

Meet Ashbeclee, Perth's new triple-decker version of international power couples Brangelina and Kimye.

Ash, Bec and Lee - not their real names - are three 20-something starlets who have grown up as WA school friends and are now journeying through the best and worst of social Perth on their way, ultimately, to the races.

They are the faces of probably Perth Racing's most radical marketing campaign, which is tagged Reimagine the Races and is aimed at dragging a younger generation back to the track. The campaign, which will be launched today, is a fight back against dwindling crowds and on-course wagering as PR try to reclaim a more relevant place in Perth's weekend entertainment market.

Ash brings a witty, sassy attitude to the trio, while Bec is a classy mother hen-type who keeps the trio grounded. Lee trades on a quirky cynicism in her search for the best the city has to offer.

They will be used across all forms of media to promote the races and their travels will also be documented in a seven-part comedy series on YouTube.

Spend any time talking to the trio and a state of conversational confusion soon takes over, particularly when the dialogue turns to jockeys and Lee insists Ash "has a thing for short men".

"No, I don't," Ash retorts as _The Weekend West _ joined Ashbeclee in their preparations for this Tuesday's Ascot races to celebrate Melbourne Cup day.

"I have been out with a whole bunch of seriously short dudes.

"But seriously, what they lack in height, they make up for in other ways."

Lee described the $2 million refurbishments on the main grandstand's first floor as "something that looks pretty spesh".
