Winged thief steals camera
A sea eagle has given a new meaning to a birds-eye view after stealing a video camera and taking it on a 100km journey through WA's remote Kimberley.
The winged thief is believed to have picked up the motion-sensor camera at a gorge on the Margaret River in May which was placed by Aboriginal rangers keen to capture images of fresh-water crocodiles.
The small device was found a few weeks ago by a Parks and Wildlife ranger at Mary River, about 110km away from the original location.
Three 30-second clips show the juvenile eagle nabbing the recorder, taking it in the air and later depositing it on the ground.
Gooniyandi ranger Roneil Skeen told the ABC he and the 14-strong ranger team who are co-ordinated by the Kimberley Land Council couldn't believe their eyes when they saw the footage.
"It was pretty amazing because it's one of the first camera traps to ever get picked up," he said.
"They've had camera traps moved [by animals] before, but not taken off, like a flying camera you know?
"It was pretty cool so we were pretty shocked."
