Good deed recognised in cabbie award

It took just nine months for Kulwinder Kumar to become WA's taxi driver of the year.

And it was all down to his discovery of a bag of money floating among the suds of an Inglewood car wash.

Mr Kumar, who won the Golden Wheel award at a function at Crown yesterday, had been filling his cab with petrol when he noticed the bag.

He remembered a cab from another taxi company had been in the vicinity shortly before. After a two-day search, he found the owner of the bag - and its $420 contents.

"I am glad I was able to find the rightful owner of the money," Mr Kumar said.

"He gave me a $50 reward and wrote me a very nice thank-you letter."

The Taxi Council of WA received about 130 nominations for the top award, including 30 women.

Mr Kumar and his family moved to WA from India in 2009 as part of a skilled migration program.

He worked as a courier before deciding to become a taxi driver last year.

"I love Perth and I love being a taxi driver," he said.

"You get to meet new people every day and go to different places."
