Classique Ivory scored a memorable win for trainer Gino Poletti and jockey Shaun O'Donnell in the $150,000 XXXX Gold Kalgoorlie Cup (2300m).
Classique Ivory ($7) settled second last and charged home strongly in the straight to beat Starlight Lady ($17) by a neck.
Imperial Command ($8) fleetingly looked the winner after taking the lead from Defy Me before the turn. He held on late to finish third.
Race favourite Fanicio was shuffled back to 12th on the turn and finished well under 58.5kg to run fifth.
O'Donnell copped a 19-day careless riding suspension for shifting out at the 150m.
Classique Ivory broke through after finishing in the placings at his past three starts at Belmont Park.Poletti, who was born in Leonora and started his racing career in Kalgoorlie, was thrilled with the win.
His move to remove the blinkers from Classique Ivory proved a masterstroke.Poletti said Classique Ivory was a 50-50 chance to tackle the $400,000 Perth Cup (2400m) at Ascot on January 1.
"He'll have at least two or three weeks off then we'll look at the cup," Poletti said.
Owner Warren Simcoe, a former trainer, gained redemption after buying Classique Ivory as a yearling to target the WATC Derby (2400m).Foot issues prevented him from tackling the derby as a three-year-old.
