Scarlett Johansson caused a storm for someone who prefers to stay out of the spotlight with her appearance at the Venice International Film Festival.

The 28-year-old actress caused a photographer frenzy in a sheer black, plunging off the shoulder Versace gown and Bulgari necklace at the premiere of her new movie Under the Skin.

In it she plays an alien seductress who destroys men.

Despite playing up her bombshell image, Johansson has shunned the spotlight after a topless snap was leaked from her mobile phone in 2011.

But the movie's backers would have loved her appearance, with most major British newspapers giving her picture a prominent display.

Johansson divorced actor Ryan Reynolds in 2011 after three years. Overnight it was reported she was engaged to French journalist Romain Dauriac.

"Eventually I want to have a family and that would be my focus, but right now I'm having fun with it," she said.

Johansson has also branched into politics, helping US President Barack Obama's re-election campaign and is keen for a woman in the White House.

"Hillary Clinton would make a wonderful president," she said. "Women have a different appreciation of humanity because of that maternal instinct. It can only be a step forward."
