Alcohol seized in booze-free community
Fitzroy Crossing police are targeting illegal home bottle shops after litres of alcohol were seized from a house in the Junjuwa community last week.
Officers executed a search warrant on the home on Wednesday after being tipped off by a member of the public.
They uncovered 52 bottles of bourbon, 21 bottles of wine, 14 bottles of scotch, four bottles of rum and seven blocks of beer throughout the house.
Sen. Sgt Andrew Stevens said the homeowners were charging $100 for a bottle of spirits and $150 for a block of beer.
"We calculate that if they had sold all of that they would have got over $9000 from the sale," he said. "This is liquor we believe has been bought in Broome and brought into the community."
A ban on full-strength takeaway alcohol came into force in Fitzroy Crossing in 2007.
Sen. Sgt Stevens said police were cracking down on people illegally bringing liquor into the community.
"Alcohol abuse in Fitzroy Crossing is a major problem for us and it has contributed to much of the domestic violence problems in the community," he said.
A woman in her 40s will be summonsed for the unauthorised sale of liquor and offering liquor for sale on an unauthorised premises.
A 21-year-old man will be summonsed for possessing unlawfully obtained property.
