Fee hits all commuters

If you're a city commuter it doesn't matter if you take the train or drive your car to work - you will be slugged more either way.

The Government will introduce a $2 daily parking fee at all train station carparks from July 1 next year.

Meanwhile, the Perth Parking Levy will increase between 5 and 15 per cent on every short-term, long-term and tenant car bay in the city, flowing through to higher parking fees.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the City of Perth was yet to be briefed on the details of the levy increases, but confirmed they would be passed on to motorists.

Property Council chief Joe Lenzo said the price rise was a discriminatory, unjustified slug.

Mr Buswell predicted the "gold coin donation" for train station carparks would not deter commuters from filling them and said the Government wanted to reduce the size of its significant subsidy of public transport.

"Two dollars a day to park your car to go on a heavily subsidised train I think is not a bad outcome," Mr Buswell said.

Jemma Green, of Curtin University's Sustainability Policy Institute, backed the $2 fee, saying it could change the culture of driving to train stations.

The fee had to be underpinned, however, by making bus routes to train stations more attractive.
