Future king cosy in Aussie wool

Royal baby George already has a special connection with Australia - and it is destined to grow.

Not only was he wrapped in a white shawl of Australian merino wool when he made his public debut, the name George is expected to soar in popularity among new parents in WA and Australia-wide.

The shawl was seen around the world after the future British king gave what appeared to be a tiny royal wave from within it as he left hospital.

The shawl was made by small family-run company GH Hurt & Son in Nottingham and is like one made for the baby's father. It is a blend of two fine Australian wools in a fleur-de-lis pattern with hand-finished scalloped edges and patterned border.

Though the name George, the hot betting favourite for his name, has not featured in WA's top 10 baby names since 1934, that is expected to change.

Back then, George was the ninth most popular WA boy's name, with 83 babies getting it. John at 280 was the most popular ahead of Ronald, Robert, William, Brian, Peter, Donald and James.

Rohan Quinn, acting registrar of WA Births, Deaths and Marriages, said the most popular baby names back to 1930 were on the registry's website. In general, the names of famous people were more popular.

The popularity of George as a top 10 name in WA from 1930 to 1934 could be because King George V was on the British throne from 1910 to 1936.
