Katter takes aim at boat people

Maverick Queensland MP Bob Katter believes the Australian coast needs up to 100 patrol boats, each carrying six Cruise missiles to deter asylum seekers breaching the nation's borders.

In a colourful announcement at Parliament House in Perth yesterday, he said the boats should have interception capacity to deter anyone trying to land unannounced like the asylum seekers who docked at Geraldton on Tuesday.

Mr Katter also said he intended his Australian Party to be a force in local politics and to have a candidate for every Federal seat in the September election.

The patrol boats should be a bit bigger than those in the present fleet but not as an offensive weapon or to threaten but to provide protection for Australia if "God forbid we end up in a crisis situation".

Mr Katter said this would give Australia a barrier "these people" could not break through. "Once they know that, they won't come," he said.

Mr Katter also outlined moves to better represent WA farmers with an assault on the milk price duopoly of the two supermarket giants.
