Jobs go as engineering firm collapses

An engineering firm in Adelaide’s northern suburbs has collapsed, leaving 120 workers out of the job.

Priority Engineering Services has been trading for almost three decades and is internationally known for its cutting edge machinery.

It has supplied Holden Mitsubishi and Ford, produced armoured vehicles for BAE, and drilling rigs.

Former Prime Minister John Howard even inspected its first-class robotics.

The company recently asked the State Government for help, but was knocked back.

“We did provide them with a $200,000 grant last year to try and help them through their difficulties, but we can’t keep funding them,” Manufacturing Minister Tom Kenyon said.

The company has spent big money in recent months bidding for lucrative, long term contracts it says would have doubled its workforce, but owner Peter Paige told 7News they simply ran out of time.

He is hopeful that if the site is sold soon, the company will be back in business.

A few of the 120 workers will return on Monday to finish existing projects.

The Workers’ Union said employees have been told not to go out looking for more jobs at the moment.
