Update 12pm: A South Australian man accused of sexually assaulting and threatening a Swedish backpacker at a Perth hostel has been remanded in custody.
Ivan James Williams, 37, was charged with two counts of aggravated sexual penetration without consent and one charge of unlawful wounding over the alleged incident yesterday at a backpacker hostel in West Perth.
Mr Williams appeared in Perth Magistrate's Court this morning where he was not required to plead to the charges.
Police allege Mr Williams and the 24-year-old Swedish backpacker were both staying at the Newcastle Street hostel.
The pair had allegedly returned to the hostel after a night out where the woman fell asleep and woke to find the man allegedly sexually assaulting her.
He is also accused of threatening the woman with a piece of glass.
Police say the 24-year-old receiving minor cuts to her body.Mr Williams did not apply for bail and he has been remanded in custody to reappear in court on April 2.
