Boat intercepted off Christmas Island

AAP, The West Australian March 10, 2013, 2:23 pm

Customs has intercepted a boat carrying 18 suspected asylum seekers north-west of Christmas Island.

The boat was spotted on Saturday by an RAAF maritime patrol aircraft.

“Initial indications suggest there are 16 passengers and two crew on board,” Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said in a statement.

The passengers will be transferred to Christmas Island, where they will be subjected to security, health and identity checks.
