FotoFreo, Australia's first international photo festival, has folded after claiming it was going to lose the backing of its major naming rights sponsor, the City of Fremantle.
The biennial festival, which had a budget of $700,000 and attracted 90,000 people last year, had grown steadily since it began in 2002.
Its demise five months after the closure of Deckchair Theatre is another blow to the cultural fabric of Fremantle.
FotoFreo chairwoman Jude Savage said losing such a key partner would have made it too difficult to secure funding from other key sponsors such as Eventscorp.
The City of Fremantle contributed $75,000 in cash and in-kind support last year and Eventscorp provided $140,000.
FotoFreo expected the city's support to be much less for the next festival in 2014.
Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt said the council had been likely to continue supporting the event."A final decision was to be made at our midyear budget review to be held this month," Dr Pettitt said.
