Suspicious fires halt trains

The Arson Squad will investigate three fires in Brigadoon which brought freight trains to a halt early this morning.

Just before 3am, firefighters were called to blazes near Cathedral Avenue and Rollinghills Drive in Brigadoon, east of Upper Swan.

While on their way to the Cathedral Avenue fire, a crew spotted another, smaller blaze nearby.

Nearly 20 trucks were sent to fight the fires, near the Bells Rapids car park, which were brought under control by about 4.30am.

They burned through a combined eight hectares and interfered with freight train operations.

Trains were running through the area as firefighters tried to contain the blaze, prompting the Department of Fire and Emergency Services to shut the railway down.

A DFES spokesman said firefighters would remain on the scene this morning to work on containment lines.

The fires have been deemed suspicious.
