Five men who allegedly staged a fake kidnapping and posted bogus footage of the prank on YouTube have made their first appearance in a Perth court.
Stefan Caramia, Nathan Daniel Geoffrey Cooper, Philip Edward Smith, Andrew Reece Storey and Thomas Colin Watts, aged between 21 and 25, faced Perth Magistrate's Court today on a charge of creating a false belief.
Police say late last year a witness reported seeing a near-naked, handcuffed man escape from the boot of a stationary vehicle and run into nearby bush while being chased by another man in Leederville.
The incident happened on Vincent Street, near the Mitchell Freeway overpass, on the afternoon of September 18.
Police will allege it was a planned hoax by five men, who recorded the prank and uploaded it onto YouTube.
None of the accused were required to enter pleas today and all had their bail extended to receive further legal advice. The men, who declined to comment outside court, will reappear in court later this month or next month.
