Jobs axed at Collie mine

Peter Kerr, The West Australian February 28, 2013, 4:56 am

Indian-owned Griffin Coal has axed 17 workers from its Collie coal mine as it continues its hunt for savings to arrest losses of up to $10 million a month.

Chris Godfrey from Griffin said while regrettable, the cuts represented only 4 per cent of its employees.

"Griffin does not anticipate further reduction in workforce numbers," Mr Godfrey said yesterday.

The debt-laden company aims to export coal through Bunbury to India to bolster its marginal Collie operations, but has so far been blocked.
