A man facing several charges relating to armed robberies will have his mental state assessed after he appeared in court this morning flanked by prison guards in riot gear.
The 25-year-old appeared by video link in the Stirling Gardens Magistrate’s Court on several charges, including armed robbery and attempted aggravated armed robbery.
After a small delay in bringing the man on to the video link, a prison guard told the court he was considered a security risk and there was a need for him to be restrained and for guards to wear riot gear.
The man’s defence lawyer George Christou told the court he had serious concerns for his client’s mental state.
Mr Christou requested the man undergo a psychiatric assessment to examine his mental state and his fitness to stand trial. The man will reappear in Stirling Garden’s Magistrate’s Court in May.
