Australia's latest war hero says he put his Victoria Cross on exhibition to remind people about the troops still serving in Afghanistan.
Cpl Daniel Keighran unveiled the display for his VC and other service medals yesterday at the Australian War Memorial's Hall of Valour in Canberra.
"I wasn't going to take it home and put it in my sock drawer," he said.
"I want people to be aware that what troops nowadays are doing. We are still in Afghanistan and some people forget that." His VC is displayed alongside the two others awarded during the war in Afghanistan to Special Air Service Regiment members Ben Roberts-Smith and Mark Donaldson.
Cpl Keighran, who lives in Kalgoorlie where he works as an underground blaster, was recognised last year for repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire during a fierce gun battle in Oruzgan province on August 24, 2010 while serving with 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment.Cpl Keighran, now a reservist, said he missed being sent overseas but kept in touch with army mates.
