WA physical assaults are up

ANGELA POWNALL, The West Australian February 20, 2013, 5:56 am

Physical assaults rose 44 per cent to 2.2 million in Australia in the past financial year and more people became a victim of a physical assault three times or more.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed yesterday that physical assaults in WA reached 195,700 in 2011-12, up from 149,100 in 2010-11.

A total of 22,500 people said they had been assaulted physically three times or more in WA.

National Centre for Crime and Justice Statistics director Fiona Dowsley said despite the 46,600 increase in physical assaults in WA, the rise was not statistically significant enough to show a trend.
