Perth may be the perfect place to live, but locals reckon it is also very expensive.
Yesterday in _The West Australian _, US comedian and prolific travel writer Tom Rhodes described Perth as "a slice of heaven at the end of the Earth", but said locals seemed bored with the city and complained that it was too slow-placed.
His comments prompted a mixed response from many readers on thewest.com.au.
One said Perth was a "great place to live but as boring as bat s ", while another said "nothing beats living in Perth - there is lots to do if you bother to dig a little".
But a constant theme was that Perth was too expensive.
Here are some of their comments.
Marian: "Western Australia is beautiful in itself . . . and it's incredibly, ridiculously, stupidly expensive.
"$4 for an avocado? $50 for a slab of beer? I love Perth, but not enough to burn holes in my wallet. Not everyone works in the mines."
Nick: "It's expensive to go out even regularly on the weekend because to drink you need a taxi and distances make it all so expensive.
"It's so spread out. Unless you live between the pub and the beach, I think it'd be hard."
Angie: "Perth is, I am afraid, dull and overpriced."
Martin: "Perth is ridiculously expensive. The eighth most expensive city in the world. All the politicians look at are average salaries, but if you aren't in mining it's just too expensive to live here!"
Jacqui: "Perth can be boring but you have to spend money to have a good time. There's only so many times one can go for a walk or to the beach."
And a reader known as "C" said: "Perth is definitely not for the poor. Only place in the world where $70k per year is lower middle class. To have fun in WA is to spend heaps and heaps of money."
Other readers rejected the idea that Perth was boring.
They said people who thought it was were "probably sitting at home and not going out" and should move to Melbourne, with its "totally rubbish weather and beaches".
Lynne: "I return home to Perth about once a year and always find it so relaxing. Yes it is a little bit of heaven, my family love it. Please do not change Perth."
And Jacqui: "Perth is only boring if you make it boring. If you really wanted to appreciate what we really have here, you've got to go out and look for it. Open your eyes."
