Car crash sparks Leach Highway blaze

The West Australian February 1, 2013, 10:22 am

A car crash in the southern Perth suburb of Wilson has sparked a bushfire but firefighters have brought it under control.

The car crashed into a pole around 9.30am, triggering the blaze in bushland near the Centenary Avenue on-ramp to Leach Highway, near Shelley Bridge.

Several roads have been closed including one westbound lane of Leach Highway from Bungaree Road across Shelley Bridge to Marjorie Avenue.

Fire crews are on the scene and aircraft have been sent to help. There is no threat to lives or homes but there is a lot of smoke in the area, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services says.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area, particularly near the Shelley Bridge, reduce speed and drive carefully because of smoke.
