Transport ministers Anthony Albanese and Troy Buswell will turn the first sod today on the biggest road project in Perth’s history — a $1 billion plan for a network of freeways and interchanges around Perth Airport.
Stage one is expected to be completed by 2018. It will include a major freeway-to-freeway interchange at the intersection of Leach and Tonkin highways, including a new access road to the proposed consolidated airport terminals.
There will also be new interchanges at the intersection of Horrie Miller Drive, Kewdale Road and Tonkin Highway and the intersection of Leach Highway and Abernethy Road.
Leach Highway will also be upgraded between Orrong Road and Tonkin Highway.The Commonwealth will spend $686 million, with the State putting in $317 million.
