An elderly woman will require surgery for a fractured hip after a violent robbery in Mirrabooka last night.

The 74-year-old was walking to her car near the KFC store at the Mirrabooka Shopping Centre about 7.30pm when an offender approached from behind.

The thief grabbed her handbag and forcefully knocked her to the ground, before fleeing in a white Hyundai hatchback.

The woman was taken to Joondalup Health Campus for treatment and is expected to undergo surgery today.
