Rain to aid Great Southern firies

Sam Tomlin, The West Australian January 4, 2013, 6:31 am

Firefighters battling a bushfire near Mount Barker may get some relief today, with showers forecast for the Great Southern town.

The fire started in a blue gum plantation near Narrikup, 20km south of Mount Barker, just before 5pm yesterday.

Around 100ha of bush were burnt last night before the fire was contained.

Thirty career and volunteer firefighters spent the night strengthening containment lines.

Drivers on Albany Highway, Watermans Road, Townshend Road, Reynolds Road, Old Coach Road and Jackson Road are advised to take care, due to heavy smoke from the fire.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
