An eight-year-old girl has died and her mother and two-year-old sister are in hospital after a crash near York last night.

The girls' mother, 30, was driving a Toyota Echo sedan just after midnight when the car left the road and slammed into a tree.

The crash happened near the corner of Great Southern Highway and Wundabiniring Road, Woottating, about 30km west of York.

The trio were trapped in the car and had to be cut free.

All three were flown to Perth for treatment but the older girl died.

The woman suffered serious injuries and is in Royal Perth Hospital while the two-year-old suffered only minor injuries and is in Princess Margaret Hospital.

The incident will be investigated by the police major crash squad.
