Bushfire burning near Broome

A bushfire warning has been issued to residents near Broome as firefighters battle an uncontrollable blaze.

FESA has issued a bushfire watch and act alert for people in Coconut Wells, 18km from the township of Broome.

The blaze, burning north of Coconut Wells near McGuigan Road, has jumped the fire break and is burning towards Lawrence Road.

Around thirty career and volunteer Bush Fire Service, Volunteer Fire Service and Department of Environment and Conservation firefighters from three brigades are on the scene.

They are burning off existing fire breaks, working to maintain containment lines and actively fighting the fire front.

A FESA spokeswoman said the fire was out of control and unpredictable, with a possible threat to lives and homes.

Firefighters are expecting the sea breeze to arrive mid afternoon which will assist efforts.

Residents have been warned to leave their property or prepare to actively defend.

Emergency crews have been battling the blaze since yesterday afternoon and believe it was caused by lightning.
