Woman dies in Broome lockup

A 44-year-old woman has died in the lockup of Broome police station in Western Australia's Kimberley region.

Police said the woman, who could not be named for cultural reasons, died early on Friday morning.

Detectives from the Internal Affairs Unit have started an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and will report to the state coroner.

Police said they were unable to comment on the cause of death before the investigation was completed.
