Eagle Newman appears in court

West Coast Eagles player Murray Edgar Newman has faced court over an alleged assault outside The Library nightclub earlier this month.

Flanked by senior Eagles staff, Mr Newman attended the Perth Magistrate's Court where his lawyer asked that his bail conditions be changed to allow the player to attend "official West Coast Eagles business" at licensed premises.

Lawyer Terry Dobson told the court his client was not ready to enter a plea on the charge of causing grievous bodily harm, which alleges he punched another man in the face outside the Northbridge nightclub on November 10.

Mr Dobson said negotiations were underway with the investigating officer "regarding the nature of the injury".

The court heard the officer was seeking information from Royal Perth Hospital.

The matter was adjourned to January 25.

Mr Newman's bail was changed to allow him to enter licensed premises for Eagles business but the conditions prevent him from staying later than 11.30pm.

Conditions also require a $10,000 personal bail undertaking with similar surety, and prevent him from consuming alcohol or approaching his alleged victim.
