Nic Naitanui's pre-season campaign will be delayed after West Coast booked their star ruckman in for surgery on his groin next week.
Naitanui, who partners Dean Cox in the Eagles' dominant ruck battery, had been hampered by the injury in the latter part of the season.
According to the club it was hoped that the off-season break would have given the complaint time to heal but Naitanui was still sore today.
A specialist recommended groin surgery.
But the Eagles are confident Naitanui will be ready for round of the 2013 season.
“Nic was managed in the latter stages of the 2012 season and based on medical advice we were hopeful that with a good rest period he would avoid the necessity for surgery,” football operations Neale Daniher said.
“Because Nic was still sore after a lengthy period of rest, we booked an appointment for him to meet with a specialist today. As a result of that consultation, Nic will have surgery next week.“We expect Nic to begin running early in the New Year and progress his recovery to be ready for the start of the season.”
