Boats intercepted off Ashmore Island

Two boats carrying asylum seekers have been intercepted off Ashmore Island.

The first, located on Sunday, was carrying 54 passengers and three crew on board.

On Monday another boat was intercepted carrying 56 passengers and four crew.

The passengers will be transferred to Christmas Island, where they will undergo security, health and identity checks and their reasons for travel will be established.

The latest arrivals follow the interception of two vessels off Christmas Island last Friday and Saturday carrying a total of 195 passengers.
