A retired Fremantle couple discovered they were $1.4 million richer when they checked a four-month-old Lotto ticket today.
The woman, who is a weekly Saturday Lotto player, told Lotterywest she only checked her tickets when she remembered to take them to a retailer.
She had been doing some spring cleaning when she found the ticket from July 7.
Despite family members speaking about an unclaimed million-dollar ticket sold at her local newsagency, Hilton Plaza Newsagency, the woman did not check the ticket until a few weeks later.
The couple planned to pop a bottle of champagne and hold a celebration dinner tonight.
“To be honest, I’d forgotten that I even had the ticket but I was waiting to meet someone at the shops this morning and saw it in my wallet,” she said.
“When they said I would have to come to head office, I thought I’d won about $1400 so it was a bit of a shock to hear it was over a million dollars.”
The couple, who do not want to be identified, said they planned to help family members and treat themselves to a cruise to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
They also wanted to make some improvements to the home and backyard that they had shared since they got married.“We love our home, so we’ll be staying here, but I might put the paint brushes away now and hire someone to do the painting for us,” the man said.
