Perth residents have six months left to convert to digital television before the analogue system is switched off.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy warned that people who had not switched over to digital television by April 16 would "miss out on all your favourite TV shows".

"We don't want anyone to get left behind," Senator Conroy said. "With only six months left until analog TV signals are permanently switched off in Perth, it is time to make sure that you, your family, and friends are digital ready now."

Once analogue television is switched off in Perth, almost 3.6 million households around Australia will be using digital television exclusively.

The rest of Australia will make the transition by the end of 2013.

Senator Conroy said the switch to digital was probably the most complex change to free-to-air television since the introduction of colour in the 1970s.

He said 83 per cent of the 705,696 homes in the greater Perth metropolitan area had already converted.
