One person has died in a house fire in Cloverdale this morning.

The Williamson Avenue house went up in flames about 9.50am.

It is not known in which part of the house the fire started.

Neighbours reported hearing a loud explosion about 9.45am and "within five minutes the entire house was engulfed".

Fire and Emergency Services Authrority spokesman Alan Gale confirmed that firefighters found a body when they entered the houses.

Firefighters had initially fought to ensure the fire did not spread to adjoining properties.

Firefighters from Welshpool, Murdoch and Kensington attended the blaze, which was brought under control by 10.12am.

Arson Squad detectives are at the scene.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known but police have said it appears suspicious.
