Fire burning at Bungles

Phoebe Wearne, The West Australian September 25, 2012, 10:14 am

The Kimberley's World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park is closed to visitors today as a bushfire burns in the area.

A bushfire advice is in place for north of Purnululu due to a fire burning in the Osmond Ranges in the Purnululu Conservation Reserve and Purnululu National Park.

The park is home to the Bungle Bungle Range.

Department of Environment and Conservation fire crews are working to contain the fire to existing road networks.

The blaze, which has been burning since Sunday, has razed about 130,000 hectares.

It is burning uncontained in spinifex and grassland in steep, inaccessible terrain.

Access to Purnunlulu National Park via Spring Creek Track is closed until further notice.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and be aware of fire and emergency services personnel working on site.

The cause of the fire is not known.
