Sharks circling dead whale in SW

Staff reporter, The West Australian September 15, 2012, 9:53 am

Update, 3pm: Ocean users are being warned as three sharks circle a whale carcass in Augusta.

A Department of Fisheries spokesman said two great white sharks and a tiger shark were spotted circling the whale at Waterwheel on the west side of the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse this morning.

The sharks followed the whale 100m offshore and north of the lighthouse to rocks between Quarry Bay and Skippy Rock where the whale remains.

Augusta-Margaret River Shire Council rangers were warning ocean users in the area.

The whale carcass is not the same carcass which the Department of Environment and Conservation agreed to move from Smiths Beach after concerns were raised by the South West surfing community.
