Update: 5pm An elderly woman died after she was struck by a ute while crossing a busy Palmyra road this afternoon.
The accident happened near the corner of Stock Road and Canning Highway about 12.50pm.
Det-Sen. Const Travis Hagan said the 81-year-old woman was believed to have been trying to cross the eastbound lanes of Canning Highway when she walked out in front of traffic.
Police were investigating whether a van swerved to avoid hitting the woman before she was then struck by the utility which was travelling east behind the van.
The woman was trapped under the utility and died at the scene.
It is understood employees from a nearby medical centre rushed out of the building to try to help the woman.
Police are hoping footage from security cameras on a bus which was passing the area at the time of the crash may provide evidence.
Police, ambulance, and fire and emergency services officers attended the scene.
Canning Highway westbound at Stock Road was closed as emergency services crews worked to clear the scene.Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
