Teen rescued in cliff fall

A teenager was rescued after falling from a cliff east of Geraldton on Saturday afternoon.

It is understood that the teen had been climbing when he fell and became trapped on a ledge high above the ground at Ellendale Pool.

The RAC rescue helicopter and 15 volunteers from the Geraldton-Greenough State Emergency Service responded to the incident.

"SES Vertical Rescue Team members worked hard to gain access to the patient," a rescue spokesperson said.

"Career firefighters from Geraldton Fire and Rescue Service provided assistance [and] local St John Ambulance personnel were also on site.

"A Critical Care Paramedic . . . was winched from the helicopter to the bottom of the cliff where he awaited the arrival of the patient.

"The cliff face was unstable and rescuers needed to factor this into the rescue effort."

The teenager was placed on a stretcher and lowered to the foot of the cliff.

"The RAC Rescue crew then winched both the patient and paramedic on board the helicopter, which was flown to Geraldton Hospital," the spokesperson said.

"Following a medical assessment, it was not considered necessary to transfer the patient to a Perth hospital."
