Search at Mount Barker after calls for help

Update, 4.45pm A search for a person who could be missing near Mount Barker has been called off.

Residents reported hearing calls for help yesterday afternoon, prompting police and State Emergency Services volunteers to search near Nancy's Point.

Several residents of an estate at the base of the Porongurup Range heard a male voice calling for help over a extended period between 10.30am to 7pm yesterday.

Police were contacted last night and started searching Porongurup National Park, about 360km south-east of Perth and 40km from Albany.

However, a police spokesman said this afternoon the search had been called off pending further information.

Nobody was found in the search and there have been no reports of anyone missing in the area.

Police have asked anyone with a friend or relative who may be hiking, trail bike riding or visiting the area to confirm their welfare or contact the Police Assistance centre on 131 444.
