The next generation of budding zoologists, physicists and astronomers took over Scitech yesterday for Toddlerfest, a two-week event highlighting the benefits of stimulating children's minds.

Proving you are never too young to learn, Toddlerfest will fill the science centre with bubbles, cuddly animals, puppet shows, playdough and other activities for children up to five years old.

Scitech chief executive Alan Brien said research indicated much of a child's development occurred before school started and Toddlerfest was about introducing parents to how a learning environment could be stimulating.

Mr Brien said children benefitted from hands-on experiences in their first four years of life.

"Things like science centres, museums and zoos are all about engaging children in the world around them," he said.

Mr Brien said parents could do simple things with their toddlers, such as reading about animals or discussing basic science concepts, before visiting interesting places.

Education Minister Liz Constable, who will launch the event tomorrow, said Toddlerfest provided young children with opportunities to engage with science.
