Police hunt arsonists after car fire

RONAN O'CONNELL and REBECCA TRIGGER, The West Australian January 20, 2012, 11:09 am

Police are hunting arsonists who set alight a car in Midland last night, causing its LPG gas tank to explode and set on fire another car.

Det-Sen. Sgt Brian Beck from Midland detectives said a Daihatsu Charade had been set alight between 11:30pm and 11:40pm as it was parked outside the NAB Bank on The Crescent.

The Daihatsu Charade's LPG gas tank then exploded and this caused a Suzuki Swift parked nearby to also catch fire. The rear bumper was also blown off in the explosion.

The force of the blast smashed windows on the east side of the building and part of the roof awning and a nearby vehicle caught fire.

Police questioned three people overnight in relation to the incident but no charges have been laid.

Police spokesman Sgt Gerry Cassidy said there was no indication the fire was an attempt to break into the bank.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
