French performer in WA talks

Famed French composer, performer and music producer Jean Michel Jarre could bring his outdoor lighting and sound extravaganza to Perth.

Jarre, whose open-air concerts are described as "hijacking an entire city for one night", is understood to be in talks with the Government about the prospect of staging a concert next year.

He has been spotted at the Perth Fashion Festival this week.

But with the cost of his concerts - which feature lighting and laser choreography, videos and fireworks - reaching around $10 million, it is understood Eventscorp is analysing the feasibility of any investment.

Jarre staged his first large-scale outdoor concert in Paris in 1979, which was attended by more than a million people. The 63-year-old son of Oscar-winning composer Maurice, Jarre has since taken his show locations such as Egypt's Pyramids of Giza and Monaco.

Jarre first tasted mainstream success with his 1976 album Oxygène.

The album's music features in running sequences in the 1981 Australian film Gallipoli.

A Tourism WA spokesman said: "We are not in a position to comment at this stage".

However, it is understood some WA ministers have been made aware of the proposal.
