Taxi driver 'tries to abduct' young girl

South Australian police have released an identikit image of a taxi driver, who tried to abduct a teenage girl near Unley High School earlier this month.

Police say the taxi pulled up next to the girl, an Unley high School student, on the corner of Smith-Dorrien and Hill Streets at Mitcham at 8.30 on the morning of Thursday August 18.

He told her that he was there to pick her up, because her father had been in accident.

He then told her to get in the car, so he could take her to the hospital to see him.

The girl refused, and the taxi followed her for a short time before turning down Truro Ave, nearby.

The taxi driver is described as being Caucasian, aged between 40 -45 years and with a bald or shaved head, skinny face and big ears.

He has blonde coloured stubble around his face, and a chin with a distinctive groove in the middle.

South Australian police say they have since worked with the Department of Education, Unley High School and other nearby schools to notify parents and students of the incident.

Police say the incident is a warning to all young people to always be alert and aware of their surroundings.

"Never get into a vehicle with someone they do not know - no matter what story they tell or plea they make," a police spokesperson said.

"It is important to report these incidents immediately to both the police and the school."

Police are asking anyone with further information on the incident, or anyone who may have seen a taxi in the area at the time of the incident to contact BankSA Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or go to their website.
