Consider one of Australia’s greatest wartime mysteries solved. Join guest reporter Jack Thompson on this very special mission to discover the truth about the dramatic night the Second World War came to Australia.

The Japanese midget sub raid on Sydney Harbour was a daring surprise attack just a few months after the carnage of Pearl Harbour.

It came close to landing a devastating blow on the Allies when the War in the Pacific hung in the balance.

For this major eight-month investigation, Sunday Night travels to Japan to interview the only Japanese survivor of the attack – a spotter plane pilot – and speaks to the Aussie gunner who watched his plane flying over the harbour identifying warships which would be targets for the midget sub torpedoes.

Jack Thompson also reveals his childhood memories, as he witnessed the audacious way the three sub crews managed to sneak past the harbour defenses.

Then, prepare for some incredible footage as we take you deep below the waves to solve the last secret of the submarine that caused so much havoc and loss of life.

The first TV pictures from inside the sub answer the tantalizing question that has endured for more than 70 years: what happened to her crew?
