Gifts for soldiers serving overseas

A group of volunteers are urging people to spare a thought for the Australian soldiers who will be spending Christmas serving overseas.

With more than 1500 Australians still on the ground in Afghanistan, one group of Adelaide volunteers is trying to spread the Christmas cheer to their loved ones.

Venetia Hudson, whose husband is on his first deployment, is organising gift packs full of donations for the 50 soldiers in his platoon.

The packs include food, vitamins, clothing and messages of support.

“They’re getting letters and pictures from school children, some beautiful cards that have been hand-written,” Ms Hudson said.

“We just wanted to give them a show of our appreciation and thanks for what they are doing.”

The gifts will come as a complete surprise for the soldiers, and the Defence Force says a taste of home will be just what they need.

“It definitely brings a smile to your face when you receive stuff, especially at Christmas time, but I mean it’s appreciated at any time of the year,” said Captain Reg Dunthorne from the 7RAR.

Anyone who wants to make a donation can visit the Care For Soldiers Facebook page.
