Burnt koalas on road to recovery

More than 700 koalas have been counted in a survey, while koalas injured in bushfires near Port Lincoln are progressing well in their recovery.

Two weeks ago, Marley, Narla and baby Olivia arrived at the Torrens Island Rescue Centre, and now they look like they are out of the woods.

Three others were also flown in for rehabilitation, but one had to be put down.

The rescue centre has even built new cages to help get the survivors back on their feet.

“Considering the significant burns they received to their hands and nose, they’re doing really well,” rescuer Aaron Machado said.

“We’re still about four to six weeks away.

“We need to release them in a suitable location to their numbers can thrive again from these guys.”

The koala population was also the centre of a statewide operation today, where volunteers helped with the great koala count.

They took photos and tagged GPS locations for a special database, and healthy numbers have been recorded from Adelaide to Burra, and right across to Port Lincoln.

“There does appear to be quite a number left after the bushfires,” said koala count participant, Bette De La Perrelle.

The database will give researchers more information as they continue to monitor koala populations.
