Train passengers are facing more disruptions with southern lines and the Adelaide Railway Station set to close next year, but passengers will be given free travel to make up for it.
The Noarlunga line will be closed from January 2 until September so new sleepers can be installed and the track electrified between Adelaide and Oaklands Park.
Adelaide Railway Station will be closed for a month during the summer school holidays, from January 2 to February 3, so as it too can be electrified and have the rail yard rebuilt.
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Patrick Conlon said the Belair line will also be closed from January 2 until mid-2013 for the construction of the $110million Goodwood Junction.
“All of these works are being scheduled to minimise disruption and avoid the need for repeated disruption,” Mr Conlon said.
“But we realise these closures will inconvenience commuters and we thank them in advance for their patience and understanding.”
He said that during the month-long closure of the Adelaide Railway Station closure, passengers would travel for free on trains and substitute buses covering trains.
“People have been very understanding that to get a better transport system, there must be some disruption,” he said.
“However, the Government has decided to provide free travel for rail commuters affected by the month-long closure in recognition and appreciation of the way they have co-operated with the upgrade disruptions.”
He said a community information campaign for passengers ahead of the closures is currently being finalised.
Outer Harbour and Grange lines will continue to operate during Adelaide Station closure, but trains will terminate at Woodville and substitute buses will go the rest of the way.
The Gawler line services will also continue, but terminate at North Adelaide with substitute buses completing the journey.
