Website helps customers compare power companies

A new website is helping South Australians on standing electricity contracts compare power retailers and get the best deal.

From today, the energy market is deregulated, but it has left many customers confused – even suspicious.

Origin is boasting a reduction of up to 16 per cent for 12 months plus a $50 rebate, while AGL is offering a 9.1 per cent saving - but there are many more retailers competing for your money.

A new website created by the National Energy Regulator is helping customers get the best deal.

Advocates for older Australians say it is worth shopping around.

“Savings of up to 15 (to) 20 per cent on your electricity bill over a whole year are certainly worth having – if you’re a pensioner, every dollar counts,” said Ian Yates from the Council on the Aging.

But beware the fine print.

“It is important to be really clear about your circumstances – one company might be cheaper if you are a large user of electricity but not cheaper if you are a small user,” Mr Yates said.

Electricity analysts are offering a free energy saving summit where speakers will discuss how you can pay less for your power.

It will be held on Tuesday, February 12, at the Old Adelaide Inn, North Adelaide from 10am.
