Adelaide woman nabbed with six kilos of cocaine in Colombia
The family of an Adelaide woman arrested in Colombia on drug charges claims she has been set up.
They insist that the Cassie Sainsbury, who is engaged to be married, was on a working holiday in the South American country when she was nabbed with almost six kilograms of cocaine.
What was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime for the 22-year-old personal trainer has ended in an overcrowded Colombian women’s prison.
She was at the airport, waiting to return home when she was arrested.
Ms Sainsbury claims the drugs were hidden in gifts she bought in Colombia for her bridal party.
Her family insists she has been set up.
"She’s just so scared that she’s caught up on the other side of the world for something she didn’t do with no support," her mother Lisa Sainsbury told 7 News.
"She’s a CFS volunteer fighter, she’s into fitness and training," she said.
"It’s so far away from what Cassie would ever do."
Ms Saisbury is due to face court in Colombia in coming months but in the meantime her family and friends have started a crowdfunding campaign to pay her legal bills.
The department of foreign affairs says it’s providing consular assistance.
